Beards are cool, to quote Mugatu from the non-Oscar winning film Zoolander they are “so hot right now”. If you look at male fashion icons today, they all have beards with the likes of Jason Mamoa, Tom Hardy, Chris Hemsworth, and Hugh Jackman all choosing to ditch the clean-shaven look in favour of facial hair. But there is more to having a beard than just not shaving, it requires care and maintenance. One of the most beneficial things you can do for your beard is use beard oil, but how exactly do you use it? Luckily for you, it is relatively straight forward!
What is beard oil?
Beard oil nourishes and hydrates your facial hair leaving it looking healthy and feeling less coarse. As your beard grows, the hair draws moisture away from your skin leaving it dry and itchy. It then becomes harder for the moisture and nutrition to reach the end of your beard leaving it incredibly dry and coarse. This is where beard oil works miracles, when applied it not only hydrates your beard, but it also nourishes the skin underneath. And as an extra bonus, beard oil makes your beard smell great as well making it a win-win situation for you.
How to apply beard oil the right way
The best time to apply beard oil is after a shower when the hair follicles have opened, meaning more of the beard oil can be absorbed into the skin and hair leaving your beard feeling soft and heathy.
Step 1
You don’t want to overdo the amount of beard oil you use as too much will leave your beard greasy and feeling sticky. Start with a small amount, we would recommend using 3 drops of beard oil to start with because you can always add more later if you need to.
Step 2
Rub your hands together spreading the oil evenly all over your palm and fingers.
Step 3
Start by rubbing the oil into the skin underneath your beard. It is important that the skin and the roots of the beard are completely nourished as this will lead to good beard health in the long term.
Step 4
Next work the oil into your beard on the side of your face applying it in a downwards direction twice and then in an upwards direction twice, this ensures maximum coverage of the beard.
Step 5
Now it’s time to apply oil to the chin area; work your hands up and down over your chin ensuring that oil is being applied from the roots to the tip of the strands.
Step 6
Spread your fingers out and starting from the bottom of the beard work your hands up through you beard ensuring every part of your beard is covered in oil.
Step 7
Finally, it’s moustache time. Using your thumbs and index fingers work from the middle to the outside gently applying oil from the root to the tip.
After you have applied the beard oil it is then best to comb your beard. This has many added benefits such as preventing ingrown hairs and making your beard look fuller!
