Skin types are split into four common categories: normal, dry, combination, and oily. It’s important to understand what category you fall into, so you know how best to manage it. Just like perfume, not all skincare products are created the same!
Today, we are taking a closer look at ways you can manage your oily skin with advice and products available at The Perfume Shop.
How do you get oily skin?
Under your skin lies the sebaceous gland which secretes a natural oil called sebum. This keeps your skin healthy and hydrated, however when the skin produces too much sebum it can lead to oily skin, blocked pores, and blemishes.
Everybody’s skin produces oil, but if you have particularly oily skin, it could be due to:
Genetics – If your parents have oily skin, then you are more likely to have it too. Thanks, mum, and dad!
Time of the year – Warmer months in summer and spring can cause your skin to be oiler than usual.
Large pores – Larger pores can be caused by weight fluctuations, age, or breakouts and when they’re larger, they can produce more oil.
How to manage oily skin
Cleanse regularly
Do not be tempted to scrub your skin hard; over-cleansing can cause dryness and confuse your skin into thinking it needs to release more oil.
Instead of over-washing your face, adopt a gentle routine in the morning and a double cleansing routine in the evening. The first cleanse will lift off makeup and any dirt that has settled on your skin throughout the day. Your second cleanse will be more effective in removing dirt or oil which has settled into your pores. Use a non-foaming, water-soluble cleanser and wash it away with a warm, wet flannel for best results.
Once your skin is cleansed and free of dirt and makeup, follow with an exfoliating toner that contains either salicylic or glycolic acid. Not only will it help reveal brighter, healthier looking skin but the acid content will help lift any excess oil or dirt in your pores which can lead to breakouts.
Having oily skin may not be the only thing troubling. If you have other skin concerns such as pigmentation, spots, fine lines, or wrinkles, then now is the time to use a targeted serum or face oil. Don’t be afraid to use a face oil with oily skin, just be conscious of the amount you apply.
You may think because you have oily skin you don’t need to include more hydration in your skincare routine, but this is not the case! All skin types need to be moisturised, both morning and night, at the end of your skincare routine (and before SPF in the morning). You just need to tailor the product for your need and for oily skin, you’ll want a lightweight and oil-free formula.
Remember the key to managing your oily skin is: Cleanse, Exfoliate, Treat, and Repeat!
