Due to nationwide lockdowns, many people have been working from home. Now, while this has some upsides (hello, regular lay-ins), it has also meant it has been tricky to split work life from your personal life. Now, a new wellness trend known as ‘fragrance-zoning’ or ‘scent-scaping’ aims to help you differentiate one space from another using different home fragrances. Here is everything you need to know to start making the most of fragrance-zoning in your home.
What is fragrance zoning?
Fragrance zoning is the method of splitting up the areas in your home using different scents. While we’re spending more time than ever in our homes, it’s important to establish which areas are for working and which are for relaxing. As we know, scent can be an incredibly powerful sense, so filling certain areas of the home can encourage certain feelings helping you stay motivated or switch off for the day.
How do you use fragrance zoning?
To fragrance zone your home, you need to fill the air in each room or space with a different scent. You can do this by burning a scented candle, placing reed diffusers in particular places, or spritzing a room spray before you settle in. For your workspace, we recommend choosing a scent that evokes feelings of happiness, while your time-out space should help you wind down, switch off, and feel at ease.
Fragrance zoning can also be adapted to the time of day you will be in that space to help you make the switch from one activity to the next. For example, if your living room serves as both your office and area, you enjoy personal activities, choose two different candles for the day and one for the evening. Over time, your mind will start associating those scents with the boundaries you have set.
When it comes to which scent goes in which area, the choice is all yours! But here’s a few options to get your inspiration flowing!
Office Space
White Grapefruit & Basil Hen Candle by Orla Kiely
Asides from being an absolute joy to look at, this moulded candle from Orla Kiely is made up of a combination of uplifting aromas to keep your motivation levels high and a smile on your face! Fragrance-zone your working space with notes of sweet mandarin, aromatic herbs, and wild rhubarb.
At the end of a long day of remote working, Zoom calls and walks around the block the living room is your saving grace for a bit of downtime. To help separate it from your working day, fill the air with the relaxing aroma of Tranquil by ME. Reed Diffuser. Available exclusively at The Perfume Shop, it blends delicate, green notes to help bring on a sense of calm.
Bedroom
Terre D’ Epices by Herve Gambs
While notes of lavender would be the obvious choice for the bedroom, we thought we’d throw in a slight curveball. Herve Gambs room sprays are made with 10% perfume concentration and offer a delightful way to spruce up the scent in your home. Terre D’ Epices utilises warm and spicy notes, such as cinnamon, pepper and patchouli, to wrap you up and envelop you in a feeling of comfort. What more could you want when you dive under the duvet in anticipation of a peaceful night’s slumber?!
